London is served by six airports, each with different advantages depending on your plans.

Best for Central London:

  • Heathrow (LHR) – London’s largest airport, located 15 miles west of central London. A car service will take 30-60 minutes depending on traffic, and the Heathrow Express train reaches Paddington Station in just 15 minutes. These options make it the most popular choice for international travelers.
  • London City Airport (LCY) – The closest to central London (6 miles), with a 30-45 minute car service journey into the city, or light rail that connects to the Tube. Limited flight options but incredibly convenient if available.

Longer Commute:

  • Gatwick (LGW) – About 30 miles south of London with a 60-90 minute car or train ride to central London. A solid option with good international connections.
  • Luton (LTN) – Approximately 35 miles north, with a 60-90 minute car journey into the city. Often used by budget airlines.
  • Stansted (STN) – Around 40 miles northeast of London, requiring 60-90 minutes by car. Popular with budget carriers.
  • Southend (SEN) – The farthest option at 42 miles east, with about a 60-90 minute commute. Less crowded but fewer flight options.

Our recommendation? If you’re flying internationally, Heathrow offers the best balance of flight options and quick access to central London.

Need help arranging airport transfers? We’ll handle it for you.

While visiting within London you do not need to hire a car. If you choose to venture beyond London, you may consider taking a train or an organized tour (easier logistics and a guide!) instead of a hire car.

Remember, the UK drives on the left-hand side of the road, so pedestrians should look right first when crossing streets.
